This visualization provides insight into the core challenges facing our current labor market–intense demand paired with rapidly inflating wages. Wage trends show advertised wages over time and track how wages have trended over the last three years.
At the current rate of wage inflation, wage observations from a year ago lag dramatically behind the present day competitive pay for a new hire.
Registered Nurses provides a stark example:
Overall, advertised wages for Registered Nurses have increased by over 40% in the last three years. In the last year alone, the annual advertised wages have increased by $30K.
For another example of wage trends at work, let’s take a look at a case of Forklift Operators in Detroit. In just one month between July and August of 2020, advertised wage for forklift operators jumped from $14.00/hr to $15.00/hr–a 7% increase in one month. What inspired the change?
A month later, on September 14th, Amazon publicly announced an initiative to hire 2000 workers in Detroit at $15 dollars an hour.
When Amazon started posting in August, the median advertised wage jumped to 15.00/hr. Other organizations trying to hire talent faced a major squeeze as Amazon entered the market and out-priced their wages. But, if they had been watching advertised wages, they could have predicted Amazon’s entry weeks before the official announcement.

New Company Name Taxonomy
We’re very excited to announce our new company name taxonomy, live in Emsi Burning Glass Products as of Monday, November 15th. The new taxonomy provides clean, global naming conventions and even higher accuracy in classifications and tagging.
The new taxonomy also uses “tradestyle” naming conventions instead of legal naming conventions. This means that “Walmart” is now defined by the colloquial “Walmart” rather than “Wal-Mart, Inc.”
Parse skills from text and view their frequency in job postings. Easily optimize job posting tests by understanding the key, common, and uncommon skills associated with an occupation.
There is a lot to come in Q1. We’re excited for the changes that are scheduled for release, stay tuned for more updates in December and January.
