Compensation Analysis

The Compensation Analysis report is built to give a granular breakdown of the compensation for a specific occupation. To see the most detailed data, begin the report by filling out as many of the fields, shown below, as possible. The report will then use an algorithm to analyze accurate compensation based on your selected data points.

For this example, we’ll be looking at compensation for computer programmers in the San Francisco area who have Python and C# programming skills and 0-3 years of experience. Once you’ve filled out your desired fields, click Run

Typical Compensation

Inside the report is a simple compensation graph. Using the explanation paragraph at the top as a reference, we can see that the median wage for computer programmers in the Bay Area is around $75.5K per year. This means that half of programmers in the region make less than $75.5K, and half make more. However, it’s important to take cost of living into account–according to the paragraph above the chart, many workers making $75.5K “feel like” they are making only $45.8K once you account for housing, food, and other basic living expenses.

To learn about how Emsi’s cost of living data is calculated, read this article.

By clicking Show All below the graph, we can see the minimum wages for the cities in the region. This can help us better understand the basis of the compensation analysis for our selected occupation.

Note that in some regions, minimum wage laws only apply to companies of a certain size. The table includes this information where relevant.

For example, in Emeryville, the minimum wage of $15.69 only applies to businesses with 56 or more employees, whereas in Berkeley, San Francisco, and most other cities on the list, the minimum wage is the same across the board regardless of business size.

Note that by setting the Experience Range filter to Any, you can also view percentile earnings for the region, state, and nation.
