The Demographic Overview is a simple yet detailed report that provides regional demographic data on age, race, and gender.
To start the report, simply select a region of study and then click Run. In this example we will be using the San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley metropolitan statistical area (MSA).
Cohort Totals
The first chart shows us total population numbers for the region we’ve selected. Below we can see that in the San Francisco area, the population grew 10% between 2010 and 2019, while in the same time frame the state of California grew by 7% and the US population grew by 6%.
Population by Age Cohort
Next, this graph shows the population of San Francisco in both 2010 and 2019 by age, divided into 4-year groups (cohorts). Note that 25 to 29 year olds, 30 to 34 year olds, and 35 to 39 year olds have the highest numbers in 2019; in 2010 however, the 40 to 44, 45 to 49, and 50 to 54 year cohorts were at the top.
Beneath the graph is a detailed list of each cohort, organized by population in 2010 and 2019, growth change, percent growth change, and 2010 percent of cohort. We can see that the 30 to 34 years cohort had the greatest change overall at 23%, and the 20 to 24 years cohort had the greatest decline at -5%.
Population by Race/Ethnicity
In this section, the population is divided by race in both 2010 and 2019. According to the graph as well as the list beneath it, the White, Non-Hispanic population in San Francisco has remained relatively the same over the past nine years. The Asian, Non-Hispanic and White, Hispanic populations, on the other hand, have increased by 29% and 11% respectively. Of the top five, only the Black, Non-Hispanic population has decreased in the area.
Population by Gender
Finally, the report graphs the population of our selected region by gender. Females in the San Francisco MSA outnumber males, just slightly, in both 2010 and 2019. Additionally, the number of males and the number of females have both increased by around 10% since 2010.
