When Will Emsi Begin Using CIP 2020?

IPEDS will begin using the new CIP 2020 classification in their Summer 2021 release, which will report completions for the 2019-2020 academic year. Emsi Burning Glass switched to the new CIP 2020 classification with IPEDS’ Summer 2021 release.

New CIP Codes

The following are new 2020 CIP codes that may be of especial interest to Emsi Burning Glass’s users.

• Computer Game Programming (CIP 11.0204)
• Cloud Computing (11.0902)
• Mechatronics, Robotics, and Automation Engineering Tech (15.0407)
• 3-D Modeling and Design Tech (15.1307)
• Data Science, General (30.7001)
• Data Analytics, General (30.7101)
• Business Analytics (30.7102)
• Data Visualization (30.7103)
• Financial Analytics (30.7104)
• Digital Marketing (52.1404)

Excluded CIP Codes

The CIP 2020 website lists about 460 new codes total; however, half of them will not be used in IPEDS reporting. These codes are generally used only for internal institutional reporting and tracking:

Hence, excluding these restricted codes, users should expect to see roughly 250 new CIP codes in IPEDS reports.
